According to CNKI, biography translation research has become an area of intense investigation. According to their data, key terms that dominate biography translation literature include translation strategies, Skopos theory and translator reflections on their practice.
Embodiment and kinship are also central themes in this volume, particularly as revealed by Grass’ discussion of gender issues that emerge through translation memoirs.
What is a biography?
Biographies are written accounts of someone’s life written by another. Biographies may focus on famous historical figures, celebrities, politicians or athletes but could also document an ordinary individual whose life has been interesting enough for someone to write it down for publication.
Biographies provide an account of an individual’s life from their birth until either death or the present time, often featuring notable events and life-altering moments in their biography. Biographies also typically provide details about family, friends, work or hobbies the subject may have had throughout his or her lifetime.
Biographies can take the form of fiction stories or non-fiction accounts of someone’s life. Biographies provide students with an excellent opportunity to develop reading and writing skills while simultaneously discovering more about famous individuals who have made an impactful mark in history.
Note that biographies should not be confused with autobiographies and memoirs, which are self-written accounts of someone’s own life written down for publication. When someone writes their life history down as a book it’s called autobiography/memoir.
Biographies may be written by those who know their subject well, such as James Boswell did when writing about Samuel Johnson; however, extensive research must often be performed in order to provide an objective and detailed account of their lives.

What is the purpose of a biography?
Biographies are forms of nonfiction writing that depict the life story of someone or something. Their aim is to educate and inform readers by offering a window into other people’s experiences. Biographies also offer a powerful means of assessing historical figures by studying their impact on those they portray, like when studying their impact on those they write about.
Students tasked with writing biographies must select an engaging subject worthy of their consideration and that will keep their interest throughout the research and writing processes. Furthermore, they should identify key themes within their subjects’ lives to use as bases for essays; finally they should create a comprehensive checklist encompassing all the main features of biographies they read so as to assess quality more easily.
One of the hallmarks of an engaging biography is its ability to recreate the world its subject lived in, showing how their life was affected by their surroundings. This includes detailing home, school and workplace environments as well as social conditions they lived under during their life. Furthermore, biographers must convey their enthusiasm about their subject so as to make reading their biography even more enjoyable for their readers.
Biographies must give their audience an in-depth knowledge of their subject’s personality, values and beliefs as well as any related struggles. Biographies also serve an educational value.
Readers of biographies can draw strength and inspiration from seeing how one individual was able to overcome obstacles in their life, thus helping them see they too have the power to realize their goals and pursue their ambitions.
Though the term „biography” only became part of English diction in the 18th century, the genre itself dates back centuries. We find examples in Gilgamesh’s epic from ancient Sumeria; classical Egyptian histories about kings and heroes; medieval lives of saints and scholars; as well as many other forms throughout history.
How can a biography be translated?
Biographies can be translated, but care must be taken to preserve their author’s voice and individuality while at the same time understanding their cultural context and history – this will enable the translator to select appropriate linguistic styles and terminology while accurately conveying cultural meaning.
As part of a translation effort, it is also essential to consider the different needs and expectations of readers when translating a biography. Some readers may prefer more detail while others might prefer an overall message conveyed by the text. Finally, aesthetic preferences and reader expectations must be taken into consideration when choosing how best to translate a biography.
Biography translation as a research field is experiencing unprecedented growth, with numerous research papers published and conferences held to discuss it. Furthermore, there are academic journals dedicated to biography translation studies such as Ye Zinan’s Talking about Translation of Biographical Texts and Translating Biographies; Mu Lei and Liu Yi’s Reviewing the Three Chinese Translations of „My China Years”: Concurrent Discussion on Biographie Literature Translation; Liu Chunyuan’s A Study on Manipulative Power Patronage in Translating Biographies Taking Steve Jobs as an Example as well.
Research in biography translation has long been a focus for scholars, and this trend seems set to continue indefinitely. While scholars once focused on translating principles, strategies, and theories; today scholars are also paying more attention to specific sentence characteristics in biography literature such as attributive clauses, complex sentences, figures of speech etc. This new direction of biography translation research has seen its development surge substantially.
What are the main types of biography?
Biographies can be divided into various categories, each serving its own specific purpose and audience. Examples of this are partial biographies, complete biographies, autobiographies and memoirs. A partial biography often focuses on one event or aspect of its subject’s life and serves as an historical record of that period in their lives. This type of biography is frequently employed as children’s books as it offers an in-depth yet accessible view into someone’s history. Rosa by Nikki Giovanni is an example of a partial biography. Elizabeth Yates won the Newberry Medal with Amos Fortune: Free Man for writing one such biography that provided a comprehensive view.
A memoir is a written account of someone’s experiences or personal life. This can include their childhood, education, career path and relationships as well as anecdotes or memories from their past. A memoir differs from a biography in that its subject typically writes the memoir themselves rather than covering an entire lifetime in depth.
Biography translation research is an increasingly popular area of academic inquiry, due to its combination of historical accuracy and literary expression. Biographies remain one of the most significant genres in literature today. One can distinguish several primary areas within this research area: translation strategy, Skopos theory, communicative translation and text typology. According to CNKI’s search results, the key words most frequently mentioned in bigraphical translation research include „biographical translation”, „translation method”, „biography”, „communicative translation” and „text typology”. These keywords represent the top topics and trends in biographical translation studies today and indicate its future direction. Translation will continue to be an essential area for research and development due to globalization’s effects on cultural industries; consequently, cross-national exchange of biography translation studies is expected to grow further.
